Sri Lanka Holidays would not reveal everything it has to offer within a fortnight of Sri Lanka Travel. Then again, within a fortnight, some of the must visit cultural destinations, wildlife attractions, nature and adventure locations, pristine beaches of Sri Lanka could be visited and enjoyed to no ends. Sri Lanka, though an island even smaller than Ireland, has such a gamut of attractions including no less than eight UNESCO World Heritage Sites, the tourists who once visited yearn to visit once again.
The tropical island of Sri Lanka (Sanskrit:Resplendent Land), a derivation of the prehistoric and most ancient historic name “Lanka” appeared in Hindu epic Mahabharata and Ramayana, with a shape of a pear, or as the ancient Indian poets and scholars loved to narrate as the in shape of a pearl pendent in the necklace of Indian subcontinent is replete with fine swathes of pristine beaches in the south western coastal belt, southern coastal belt and eastern coastal belt; punctured with wildlife sanctuaries, tropical rain forests and strict nature reserves.
The ancient island of Sri Lanka is littered with ancient cultural ruins together with well preserved historical ruins; studded with renovated ancient historical and cultural monuments, renovated ancient irrigation systems consisting of massive man-made rainwater reservoirs some of which are like inland seas; ornamented with the natural beauty of the beaches and lagoons, varying and contrasting terrain of the plains, wet lands and Central Highlands that run up to an altitude of 2000 meters above sea-level.
As the English film director Sir Carol Reed who shot some excellent scenes for the movie adaptation for Joseph Conrad’s famous novel “The Outcast”, put it “Whole of Sri Lanka is a movie set.’ Sir Carol could hardly be off the mark.
But then, having quoted that, we must hasten to add, Sri Lanka doesn’t consist of flood-lit movie sets: it’s colossal Buddhist monuments at the UNESCO World Heritage Sites of ancient kingdoms Anuradpuara, Polonnaruwa and a multitude of other sites are living testimony to architectural glory as well as to the classical age of Sri Lanka that saved the world heritage of Buddhism when same declined in the original land of India; Sri Lanka’s ancient vast cascading irrigation schemes that consist of rainwater reservoirs, devised with the concept of United biology (interdependence of humanity with ecology, biology and zoology), are the lifeline that irrigate the modern Sri Lanka; its numerous sites of wildlife and nature reserves that includes the south-central area of Sri Lanka, the World Heritage Sites of Central Highlands comprising Horton Plains National Park, Knuckles Conservation Forest and Peak Wilderness Protected Area, consists of no less than 13 percent of the land of the island; its unbroken historical narrative, Mahawamsa of 2500 years of unbroken civilization coupled withTripitaka, the Theravada Buddhist cannon make peerless contributions towards the heritage of the humanity today, in addition to moral succor and ethical sustenance brought into the Sinhalese Buddhist civilization of Sri Lanka.
